NEW YORK - The International Trademark Association (INTA) announced in a press release that Giulia Maienza, an associate in the Milan, Italy office of Herbert Smith Freehills LLP, is a recipient of the Association’s 2021 Tomorrow’s Leader Award in recognition of her early leadership merits in the intellectual property (IP) industry.

The global association of brand owners and trademark professionals presents this award annually to outstanding professionals who have been practicing trademark law for five years or less to inspire the next generation of IP professionals and to help accelerate the development of the recipients within the Association and the global trademark community.

Ms. Maienza, who has worked at the global law firm for nearly four years, focuses on the protection of trademarks, designs, geographical indications, copyright, and other IP assets. She has experience with data protection and privacy, and she has authored articles on topics related to historical trademarks, trademarks and fashion, IP protection for indigenous peoples, nontraditional marks, and more.

In addition, she has performed pro bono work for organizations in both Italy and the United Kingdom. Her efforts have included trademark filings for a UK-based magazine that creates opportunities for the homeless, and to an Italian radio station operated by adolescents.

Ms. Maienza called receiving the award “an honor,” and said she is excited to “have the opportunity to be part of the INTA family.”  She added: “INTA brings together some of the best global talents in the IP field and encourages genuine dialogue on all aspects of IP and the future. I am truly excited about joining this community.”

In recognizing Ms. Maienza, INTA President Tiki Dare called her a “rising star” in the IP field. “We’re thrilled to honor her for all she has already accomplished in her short career, and for all that she is yet to accomplish. She blends her work and her other passions, including myriad pro bono efforts—a very admirable pursuit to help society,” Ms. Dare said.

As an award winner, Ms. Maienza can serve on an INTA committee and receives complimentary registration to the 2021 Annual Meeting Virtual+ and the 2022 Annual Meeting.

After studying in both Beijing, China, and Lleida, Spain, Ms. Maienza graduated with a Laurea Magistrale LM in Giurisprudenza (Law) from Università degli Studi di Milano (University of Milan) in 2016 and attended an LL.M. in IP organized by the University of Turin and WIPO in 2020/2021.

Ms. Dare announced the Tomorrow’s Leader Award winners in a video announcement on the opening day of INTA’s 2021 Annual Meeting Virtual+, which is taking place through November 19. The other 2021 award recipients are Agnese Gerharde of COBALT, Riga, Latvia; and Pedro de Abreu M. Campos of Di Blasi, Parente & Associados, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Throughout the Meeting, Ms. Dare will also announce the winners of the INTA Service Awards and the President’s Award.
