ABU DHABI – The Trademark Office in the United Arab Emirates recently issued the Decision No. 3 of 2014 related to Trademark Examination Procedures.

By virtue of the Decision, the trademark pre-examination decision and grant extensions of time during the trademark examination process will no longer be issued. However, acceptance, conditional acceptance and rejection decisions will be only issued.

The Decision further stipulates that the trademark application with list of goods and services that do not conform to the International Classification of Goods and Services (Nice Classification) will be refused.

Meanwhile, the use of class heading in trademark application is possible to ensure that the specifications of goods and services set out in compliance with the International Classification of Goods and Services, and thus the trademark will not be refused.

The said Decision enters into force on June 1, 2014.
