UNCTAD Secretary General Commends Abu-Ghazaleh’s Support to the International Organization and to Global Services Sector

AMMAN - The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) Secretary General Dr. Subachi Panitchpakdi highly praised the efforts exerted by HE Dr. Talal Abu-Ghazaleh, chairman of Talal Abu-Ghazaleh Organization (TAG-Org) at the Global Services Forum (GSF) - Beijing Summit that was held May 28-29, 2013.

 In his letter to Dr. Abu-Ghazaleh, the Secretary General thanked Abu-Ghazaleh for his excellent contribution to the success of the Forum and stated: “Your able chairmanship allowed participants to engage in constructive exchanges of views, ideas and experiences on how to make the services economy and services trade driving forces for sustainable and inclusive development around the world, especially in developing countries.”

Panitchpakdi added in his letter: “Your insight and vision on the development of services sector greatly benefited the participants. I strongly believe that this Forum not only helped further raise awareness globally of the importance of services and trade in services in development and poverty reduction, but also helped promote the growth of services and trade in services both nationally and internationally.”

Meanwhile, Panitchpakdi stressed that UNCTAD will continue to work comprehensively on services by conducting research and analysis, promoting intergovernmental dialogue and consensus-building and helping developing countries strengthen their policy, regulatory and institutional capacities in support of their services sector.

At the closing of his letter, Panitchpakdi addressed Dr. Abu-Ghazaleh saying: “Your ongoing support for UNCTAD’s work, including the Global Services Forum, is highly valued and I look forward to your participation in the next Global Services Forum.”

Abu-Ghazaleh chaired a high- level session tackling trade policy implications and value added impact on trade in services at the Beijing edition of the Global Services Forum held at the China National Convention Center.

The Forum is an annual event that brings together highest-level policy-makers, services regulators, heads of international organizations, CEOs and private sector representatives, coalitions/associations of services industries, renowned academics and other stakeholders to openly discuss strategies and approaches to strengthen the development impact of services.

In addition, Abu-Ghazaleh led in associations with world business leaders a High Level Panel on 21st Century Visions on Global Services Economy.

The Beijing edition of the Forum is jointly organized by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the Ministry of Commerce of the People's Republic of China and the Beijing Municipality.
