Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to Accede to WIPO’s PLT & PCT

GENEVA - The Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) notified the Minister for Foreign Affairs the deposit by the Government of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, on May 3, 2013, of its instrument of accession to the Patent Law Treaty (PLT), adopted in Geneva, on June 1, 2000, and the KSA’s deposit of its instrument of accession to the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT), done in Washington on June 19, 1970, amended on September 28, 1979, modified on February 3, 1984, and on October 3, 2001.
According to WIPO, the PLT Treaty will enter into force, with respect to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, on August 3, 2013, while the PCT will enter into force on August 3, 2013.
The PLT is designed to streamline and harmonize formal requirements set by national or regional Patent Offices for the filing of national or regional patent applications, the maintenance of patents and certain additional requirements related to patents or patent applications, as for example communications, representation or recordation of changes concerning patents and patent applications.
While the PCT makes it possible to seek patent protection for an invention simultaneously in each of a large number of countries by filing an "international" patent application. Such an application may be filed by anyone who is a national or resident of a Contracting State. It may generally be filed with the national patent office of the Contracting State of which the applicant is a national or resident or, at the applicant's option, with the International Bureau of WIPO in Geneva.
