National Arabized Domain "تونس." Launched

TUNIS - By virtue of Decision No. 12/2012 approved by Tunisian Council of the Telecommunications National Authority (INT) on February 16, 2012 the naming charter of the Arabized Domain "تونس." has been approved, whereby the marketing of domain names in Arabic script has been officially launched on March 1, 2012, according to Abu-Ghazaleh Intellectual Property.
The launching of Arabic domain names will be planned according to a schedule including two intermediate phases (Sunrise) and a total opening phase (Landrush) detailed as follows:
- Sunrise 1: March 1st to May 31st, 2012
The registration of domain names in Arabic script will be restricted during this phase to public institutions and structures. Applications to get such domain names should be directly addressed to the Tunisian Internet Agency (ATI).
- Sunrise 2: June 1st to September 28th, 2012
During this phase, the registration of Arabic domain names is allowed to holders of registered trademarks in the Arabic language in Tunisia.
- Landrush: starting from October 1st 2012
During this phase, the registration of such domain names is open to any person or entity in accordance with the terms of the naming charter of the national domain "تونس.".
During the Sunrise 2 and Landrush phases, applications for a domain name in Arabic script should be submitted in accordance with the terms of the "تونس." Naming Charter through one of the accredited registrars listed on http://www.regsitre.tn
The expected objectives through the marketing of Arabized domain names include boosting the development of content in Arabic and increasing the visibility of local content internationally.
