Free Trade Agreements Will Help TM Owners Protect their Rights - INTA

NEW YORK, NY - The International Trademark Association (INTA) welcomes passage by the US Congress of the free trade agreements with Colombia, Panama and South Korea.
A press release by the Association stated that the three agreements include important provisions for the protection of trademarks, making it easier for companies involved in bilateral trade to protect their brands in the international market.
“We commend the US Congress for passing the free trade agreements,” said INTA Executive Director Alan C. Drewsen. “Once they are signed and implemented, trademark owners will benefit from a simplified and standardized trademark system in the global market.”
The free trade agreements with Colombia, Panama and South Korea include provisions that call for the signatories’ adherence to international trademark treaties such as the Madrid Protocol and the Singapore Treaty. They also commit the parties to streamline trademark administrative requirements and to ending mandatory license recordation, which is often a burden on trademark owners.
INTA has been an advocate for the prompt passage of the free trade agreements, and in April 2011, the Association submitted comments to members of the Ways and Means Committee of the House of Representatives to express its support.
Later in May 2011, INTA launched the Model Free Trade Agreement, which is designed to facilitate and enhance the Association’s contribution to the work of trade agreement negotiators with regards to the treatment of trademark rights.
