WASHINGTON, DC - The following is a statement from Business Software Alliance (BSA) President and CEO, Robert Holleyman, applauding President Barack Obama’s appointment of Howard Schmidt to serve as Cybersecurity Coordinator:
“The position of Cybersecurity Coordinator is an important component in the Administration’s ongoing effort to coordinate a government-wide national strategy for cyber security. We are pleased with President Obama’s unprecedented and continued personal leadership in bringing cyber security to the forefront of national priorities.
“We look forward to working with Mr. Schmidt to implement the Administration’s cyber-security vision, which is based on government’s partnership with industry, leveraging innovation, addressing cyber security at the international level, and opposing mandates of government security standards.
“I have known and worked with him for many years and believe he will be a first-rate coordinator, with the exact mix of skills that are needed for the job. He brings to the position government, law enforcement, and industry experience, bi-partisan political weight, and expertise in cyber security. His understanding of the issues and his commitment to advancing the nation's interest and level of cyber-security preparedness are without equal. We are confident he will be successful.”
In its recently-released Cyberspace Policy Review Dashboard, a Web-based report and timeline that tracks policymakers’ progress against cyber security policy goals, BSA recommended that the Cybersecurity Coordinator be appointed without delay in order to ensure that national cyber-security efforts are more cohesive and effective.
