JIMS and AGIP Sign a Memorandum of Understanding for More Effective Trademark Protection

AMMAN - A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) will be signed on November 20, 2005 between the Jordanian Institution for Standards and Metrology (JISM) and Abu-Ghazaleh Intellectual Property (AGIP) at the Institution’s headquarters in Amman.

The Memorandum aims at enhancing and developing methods and mechanisms formulated to protect consumers and to prevent commercial fraud.

JISM General Director Dr. Yasin Khayat signs the Memorandum along with AGIP Chairman Talal Abu-Ghazaleh with the attendance of a number of officials from the two parties.

According to a press release by AGIP, this cooperation will lead to creating the appropriate climate for investment in the Kingdom, it will also upgrade services provided to AGIP clients through protecting their rights as trademark owners and banning the entry of products that infringe on the original and registered trademarks in the country.

The MoU stipulates the need to set up a mechanism through which AGIP provides the Institution with a special database of AGIP trademark proprietors so that both parties coordinate their efforts to prevent the spread of products which infringe on these trademarks and violate Standards and Metrology Law.

In addition, AGIP will establish a bureau for intellectual property at the Institution, which will offer special consultancy on all IP fields to enhance the quality of services provided by JISM.

AGIP will also hold special training courses and workshops for the Institution’s employees providing them with information and promoting awareness concerning the intellectual property protection issue.

Jordan Institution for Standards and Metrology plays a proactive role in protecting the interests, health and safety of citizens and environment and enhancing the competitiveness of Jordanian products in the national, regional and international markets by keeping with the national goals and contributing to achieving them within the defined priorities.

To achieve this, JISM fulfils its mandate to build, implement and update systems compatible with international practices, in the fields of standardization, metrology, certification, accreditation, testing, inspection, information and related areas through developing and motivating human resources and relying on knowledge and information sources.
