VIENNA - Sanochemia Pharmazeutika AG announced on Tuesday the award of the Austrian patent (AT 500576) entitled “Method for the preparation of crystal forms of torsemide in a pure state”.
According to a press release by the pharmaceutical company, the issue of this patent provides legal protection in Austria through 28.07.2024 for a process developed in-house which involves the production of the active pharmaceutical ingredient torsemide. Further national and regional patent awards are expected in due course within the area covered by the European Patent Treaty, plus the USA, Canada, Japan and Mexico, following an international patent specification published in July (WO2006/010189).
Torsemide used in a medication to treat high blood pressure, is a so-called loop diuretic that is widely regarded by physicians as being particularly effective due to its favorable pharmacological properties.
High blood pressure is one of the most common medical diagnoses in western industrialized countries. In 2005, German health insurance schemes spent around two billion euros on drugs to remedy high blood pressure. Torsemide’s market share in Germany, one of the leading pharmaceutical markets, currently stands at around 40%.
“The award of this first national patent for our innovative synthesis process is a key safeguard protecting our extremely successful torsemide business with major pharmaceutical partners,” Dr. Josef Böckmann, CEO commented.
Torsemide is already one of the company’s top revenue drivers and is expected to continue to increase Synthesis Division turnover as its remaining market potential is progressively tapped.
